HAJ WITHOUT A MAHRAM
Q. Is it permissible for my mother to go for Hajj without a Mahram? My mother is elderly and has no sons or Mahram available. Some agents are saying that she can go for Hajj with them and they will be her Mahrams. Is this correct? I find this strange because they are not related to her.

A. It is not permissible for your mother to go for Hajj without a Mahram male relative. The Hadith is clear in which Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) responded to a woman who wanted to go for Hajj:
ليس لها أن تنطلق إلا بإذن زوجها ولا يحل للمرأة أن تسافر ثلاث ليال إلا ومعها ذو محرم تحرم عليه
“It is not permissible for her to leave the home without the permission of her husband and it is not permissible for a woman to travel the journey of three days (the Safar distance) without being accompanied by a Mahram male relative”
(as-Sunan al-Kubra by Bayhaqi, Hadith #: 10420, Narrated by Ibn Umar)
The agents who claim that can be a Mahram to her are guilty of deception and distorting the Shari’ah which is an extremely grave sin. It has come to our notice that certain agents are guilty of this practice.
