Seeking of Knowledge

From The Holy Quran

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.
اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ
Read: In the name of your Lord Who created. Quran: 96:1
خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ
Created man from a clot of blood. Quran: 96:2
اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ
Read: And your Lord is the Most generous, Quran: 96:3
الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ
Who taught [man the use of] the pen, Quran: 96:4
 عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
and taught man that which he did not know. Quran: 96:5

Quran, Surah Al Alaq - 96
Indeed, your Lord knows, [O Muhammad], that you stand [in prayer] almost two thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you. And Allah determines [the extent of] the night and the day. He has known that you [Muslims] will not be able to do it and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur'an. He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking [something] of the bounty of Allah and others fighting for the cause of Allah . So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakah and loan Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah . It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah . Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.  (Quran, Surah Al Muzammil - 73)

Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it - it is they who are the losers. (Quran, Surah Al Baqarah - 121)

And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path. (Quran, Surah Al Haj - 54)

Who listen to speech and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are people of understanding. (Quran, Surah Az Zumar - 18)

This [Qur'an] is notification for the people that they may be warned thereby and that they may know that He is but one God and that those of understanding will be reminded. (Quran, Surah Ibrahim - 52)

Then is he who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth like one who is blind? They will only be reminded who are people of understanding -  Those who fulfill the covenant of Allah and do not break the contract,  And those who join that which Allah has ordered to be joined and fear their Lord and are afraid of the evil of [their] account,  And those who are patient, seeking the countenance of their Lord, and establish prayer and spend from what We have provided for them secretly and publicly and prevent evil with good - those will have the good consequence of [this] home -  Gardens of perpetual residence; they will enter them with whoever were righteous among their fathers, their spouses and their descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, [saying],  "Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home." (Quran, Surah Ar Ra ' d, 19 - 24)

Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding. (Quran, Surah Az Zumar - 9)

Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (Quran, Surah 'Ali 'Imran - 18)

O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, "Arise," then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do. (Quran, Suran Al-Mujadila - 11)

So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts. (Quran, Surah Al-Haj - 46)

He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding. (Quran, Surah Al Baqarah - 269)

He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.  (Quran, Surah Taha - 114)

[And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous.  And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations. (Quran, Surah Ash-Shu`ara', 83 - 84)

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned. (Quran, Surah Al-'Isra' - 36)

Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allah ; and I am not of those who associate others with Him. (Quran, Surah Yousuf - 108)

Anas Bin Malik  (Radhiallahu anhu: meaning: May Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s  Messenger  (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, meaning: May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) said, “Seeking of knowledge is incumbent upon every Muslim...”  (Ibn Majah 1/224 and Tirmidhi 218)

Abdullah ibn Amir ibn Al As(Radhiallahu anhu) narrated that Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said, “Knowledge consists of three things: the decisive verses (Qur’an), authentic Hadith and prescriptions rightly deduced from the two.  What is beside them is superfluous (extra).”  (Ibn Majah 1/54 and Abu Dawud 2879)

Uthman Bin Affan (radhiallahu anhu)  narrated that Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “The most superior among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it.”  (Bukhari  6/546)
4. Abdullah bin Umar (radhiallahu anhu)  narrated  that Allah’s  Messenger(Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said, “Do not wish to be like anybody except in two cases: The case of a man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it in the right way; and that of a man whom Allah has given religious wisdom (i.e., Qur'an and Sunnah) and he gives his verdicts according to it, and teaches it to others.”   (Bukhari  9/419 and 6/543)

5. ‘Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakra’s  father (Radhiallahu anhu)  narrated  that the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said: “If Allah wants to do good to a person, he makes him comprehend the religion and of course knowledge is attained by learning.” (Bukhari 1/67)

6. Abdullah Bin `Amr (Radhiallahu anhu) narrated  that  according to Jabir Bin Abdullah (Radhiallahu anhu)  the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said,  “…I have left among you the Book of Allah, and if you hold fast to it, you would never go astray…”  (Muslim  2803.1)

8. Jabir Bin Abdullah (Radhiallahu anhu)  reported that... Allah’s  Messenger (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said, “...The best of affairs is the Book of Allah (the Qur’an) and the best of guidance is the guidance given by Muhammad...” (Muslim 1885 and Ibn Majah 1/45)

Abu Hurairah (radhiallahu anhu)  narrated that  Allah’s  Messenger (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said, “…He who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah will make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him.  And those persons who assemble in one of the houses of Allah (mosques), recite the Book of Allah and learn and teach the Qur'an (among themselves), there will descend upon them tranquility, mercy will cover them.  The angels will surround them and Allah will mention them in the presence of those near Him. He who is slow-paced in doing good deeds, his (long) descent does not make him go ahead.”  (Muslim 6518)

10. Abu Kabsha al-Anmari (radhiallahu anhu)  narrated that Allah’s  Messenger (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said, "There are three things which I swear to be true, and I shall tell you something else, so keep it in mind. The three things which I swear to be true are:  that a man’s  property does not become less on account of sadaqah; that when a man is wronged and bears it patiently Allah will give him greater honor on that account; and that when a man opens a door towards begging Allah opens for him a door towards poverty. The thing I am going to tell you which you must keep in mind is this. The world has only four types of people: 1) A man whom Allah provides with property and knowledge, in which he fears his Rabb and joins ties of relationship, acting in it towards Allah as is due to Him, this man being in the most excellent station. 2) A man whom Allah provides with knowledge but not with property, who says with a sincere intention that if he had property he would act as so and so does, their reward being equal. 3) A man whom Allah provides with property but not with knowledge, in which he acts in a random manner ignorantly, not fearing his Rabb respecting it, or using it to join ties of relationship, or dealing with it in a right way, this man being in the worst station. 4) A man whom Allah provides with neither property nor knowledge, who says that if he had property he would deal with it as so and so does and has this intention, the load they have to bear being equal.”  (Tirmidhi 5287)

11. Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakra’s  father (radhiallahu anhu)   narrated that Allah’s  Messenger (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said, “It is incumbent upon those who are absent because those who are absent might comprehend better than the present audience.”  (Bukhari 1/67 and 2/797)

15. Abdullah ibn Mas`ud (radhiallahu anhu)  narrated that Allah’s  Messenger (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said to him: “Acquire the knowledge and impart it to the people. Acquire the knowledge of Fara'id (laws of inheritance) and teach it to the people.  Learn the Qur'an and teach it to the people ;for I am a person who has to depart this world..  The knowledge will be taken away and turmoil will appear to such an extent that two people will not agree in regard to a case of inheritance distribution and find none who would decide between them.”  (Tirmidhi  279)

16. Abu Hurairah (radhiallahu anhu) narrated that  Allah’s  Messenger (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)   said,  “He who acquires knowledge by which Allah’s  pleasure is sought, (and) he does not acquire it, but (acquires it) to gain worldly good, will not sense the odor of the Paradise on the Day of Resurrection.”  (Ibn Majah 1/252)

18. It has been narrated on the authority of Sulayman ibn Yasar (radhiallahu anhu)  who said “People dispersed from around AbuHurayrah, and Natil, who was from the Syrians, said to him: ‘O Shaykh, relate (to us) a tradition you have heard from Allâh’s Messenger (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).’ He said “Yes. I heard the Allâh’s Messenger (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said  ‘The first man (whose case) will be decided on the Day of Judgment, will be a man who died as a martyr. He shall be brought (before the Judgment Seat). Allâh will make him recount His blessings (i.e. the blessings which He had bestowed upon him) and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his life).  (Then) will Allâh say: ‘What did you do (to requite these blessings)?’  He will say: ‘I fought for Thee until I died as a martyr.’ Allâh will say: ‘You have told a lie. You fought so that you might be called a brave warrior. And you were called so.’ (Then) orders will be passed against him and he will be dragged with his face downward and cast into Hell.  Then,  there will be brought forward a man who acquired knowledge and imparted it (to others) and recited the Qur’ân. He will be brought, Allâh will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime).  Then will Allâh ask: ‘What did you do (to requite these blessings)?’  He will say: ‘I acquired knowledge and disseminated it and recited the Qur’ân, seeking Your pleasure.’ Allâh will say: ‘You have told a lie. You acquired knowledge so that you might be called “a scholar”, and you recited the Qur’ân so that it might be said “He is a Qari” and such has been said.’ Then orders will be passed against him and he shall be dragged with his face downward and cast into the Fire.  Then will be brought a man whom Allâh had made abundantly rich and had granted every kind of wealth. He will be brought, Allâh will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them and (admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime).  Allâh will (then) ask: ‘What have you done (to requite these blessings)?’  He will say: ‘I spent money in every cause in which  You wished that it should be spent.’     Allâh will say: ‘You are lying.   You did (so)  that   it might be said about (you): “He is a generous fellow”, and so it was said.’ Then will Allâh pass orders and he will be dragged with his face downward and thrown into Hell.”   (Muslim 4688)

23. Abdullah ibn Abbas (radhiallahu anhu)  narrated that Allah’s  Messenger (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said: “A single scholar of religion is more formidable against Satan than a thousand devout people.”  (Tirmidhi 217 and Ibn Majah)

24. Abdullah Bin Mas`ud  (radhiallahu anhu)  narrated that Allah’s  Messenger (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said, “A man shall be asked concerning five things on the day of resurrection: concerning his life, how he spent it; concerning his youth, how he grew old;  concerning his wealth, whence he acquired it, and in what way he spent it; and what was it that he did with the knowledge that he had.”   (Tirmidhi 5197)
