Celebrating Birthdays in Islam

Question

My question is regarding celebrating birthdays. I don’t celebrate birthdays, but my family members do. Every year my in laws take my daughter out to celebrate her birthday. I have tried explaining to them in light of Deen and why we do not celebrate birthdays. My husband won’t say anything either. How should I deal with this situation?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Sister;

You have communicated your concerns to your in laws. It is possible your husband’s silence is due to being caught up in the predicament and he does know what to do. If you feel persisting on the issue will cause a problem with your in laws, we advise you do not pursue the matter with them. You can continue advising your daughter and as she comes of age and understanding, she herself may react against celebrating birthdays. Talk to her about the Sunnah and how important it is to follow the lifestyle of Rasulullah Sallallāhu Alayhi Wasallam.Encourage and inspire her. That attitude will have a positive impact.

And Allah knows best.
