CAN A MOBILE PHONE THAT HAS THE QUR’AN STORED ON IT BE TAKEN INTO THE TOILET?

Question:

If one has an verse of the Qur’an in ones pocket or a cellphone with recordings of Qur’an on it can one enter the toilet?

Answer:

At the outset, we wish to point out that keeping the digital text of the Qur’an on a cellphone is inappropriate. The Qur’an is the word of Allah and should not be reduced to a mobile application where the mobile is just carried everywhere and anywhere.

Nevertheless, if the text of the Qur’an or its recitation is stored on a mobile phone, it will be permissible for one to enter the bathroom with it on condition that the application is turned off or the phone is concealed in ones pocket or clothing.

Related to the subject, the trend of having the recitation of the Qur’an or the Adhaan as a ringtone has become increasingly common of recent. This is not permissible. The Qur’an was not revealed to be a ringtone nor was the Azaan prescribed to alert one for the mundane task of receiving a call. Allah blessed this Ummah with the Azaan as a call towards the great Ibadah of Salaah; to cut oneself off from all worldly affairs and proceed to the Musjid and engage in the worship of Allah alone. The Holy Qur’an was revealed to be recited, listened to attentively and to take lessons and guidance from.

Another discrepancy which has crept into our society is that the recitation of the Qur’an is played in the vehicle and the driver and passengers are engaged in idle chatter. This is gross disrespect to the Holy Qur’an. Whenever the recitation of Qur’an is being played, complete attention should be given to the recitation as Allah has commanded:

 وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنْصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ

“And when the Qur’an is being recited, listen to it attentively and remain silent

so that you may be showered with the mercy (of Allah)”

(Suratul A’raf, Verse: 204)

In conclusion, the Qur’an should be shown utmost reverence for it is the word of Allah himself. It is a blessing and mercy to this Ummah and the more reverence we show to the Qur’an, the more Barakah and guidance we will attain from it.
