In this post Insha Allah i will try to cover some of the Hadiths which are quoted by people to say that it is a proof for reciting Surah Fatiha behind the Imaam. Hadith No. 1 حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ النُّفَيْلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ، عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، قَالَ: كُنَّا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ فَقَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ: «لَعَلَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ خَلْفَ إِمَامِكُمْ» قُلْنَا: نَعَمْ هَذًّا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: «لَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا» SANAD (Chain of Narrators) Imam Abu Dawud Rh. »»► Abdullah bin Muhammed An Nufaili Rh. »»► Muhammed Ibn Salama Rh. »»► Muhammed bin Ishaq Rh. »»► Makhool Rh. »»► AN Mahmooh bin Rabii Rh. »»►Ubaada bin Saamit Rdh. »»► Rasoolullah S.A.W. Text (Matan) This hadith states that Rasoolullah S.A.W said to (Sahaba Rdh.): maybe you recite behind the Imaam? We (Sahaba Rdh.) said Ya Rasoolullah ! we recite in haste. Rasoolullah S.A.W said: Only recite Surah Fatiha, because without it the salaah is not complete and don't recite anything else. (Sunan e Abi Dawud : Hadith 823) Answer (Al Jawaab) It is Batil to quote this hadith and say that one should recite Surah Fatiha behind the Imaam and its Wajib. In the chain of narrators, one of the narrator is Makhool Rh. is a Mudallis (meaning one who gives false impression regarding narration of hadith) and quotes from 'AN' (meaning someone, no name of the person) (Tabqaat ul Mudalliseen : 46) (Kitaab ul Mudalliseen Lil Iraaqi : Page 92) (Asma ul Mudalliseen Lil Ajami : Page 56) (An Nukat Li Ibn Hajar : Volume 2 : Page 640) (Jaami ut Tehseel : Page 110) (Tauzihul Afkaar : Page 366) So this Hadith becomes Daeef. Hadith No. 2 Another hadith from Ubaada bin Saamit Rdh. comes with a different chain of narrators which is mentioned below: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، نا أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، سَمِعَ مَكْحُولًا، يَقُولُ: نا نَافِعُ بْنُ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، قَالَ: صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ: «هَلْ قَرَأَ مَعِي مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ؟» قَالُوا: نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ. قَالَ: ” إِنِّي أَقُولُ: مَا لِي أُنَازَعُ الْقُرْآنَ، وَلَكِنْ لَا يَقْرَأْ مِنْكُمْ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ “ SANAD (Matan) Imam Abu Saeed Al Shaashi Rh. »»► Muhammed Ibn Ishaq Rh. »»► Muhammed Ibn Omer Rh. »»► Usaama bin Zaid Rh. »»► Makhool Rh. »»► (Haddasana [I heard]) Naafe bin Mehmood Rh. »»► Mehmood bin Rabii Rh. »»► Ubaada bin Saamit Rdh. — > Rasoolullah S.A.W. (Al Musnad Lish Shaashi : Volume 3 : Page 193) Notice that in this hadith by Ubaada Rdh. - Makhool Rh. says I heard and mentioned the name of the person Naafe bin Mehmood Rh. This narrator has been classified as a Majhool (meaning unknown) or has been listed in the category of Majhool (meaning unknown) Imam Tahawi Rh. Al Mutawaffa 321 Hij. Imam Ibn Abdul Barr Rh. Al Mutawaffa 463 Hij. Imam Ibn Qudaama Rh. Al Mutawaffa 620 Hij. Imam Ibn Qattan Rh. Al Mutawaffa 628 Hij. Imam Abu Muhammed Abdul Haq Rh. Al Mutawaffa 541 Hij., Imam Abu Bakr Jasaas Rh. Al Mutawaffa 370 Hij. Imam Qurtubi Rh. Al Mutawaffa 671 Hij. Imam Ibn Hajar Rh. Al Mutawffa 852 Hij. Imam Mardeeni Rh. Al Mutawaffa 750 Hij. Sheikh Nasiruddin Albaani Rh. Al Mutawaffa 1420 Hij. According to the standards of the hadiths, this hadith also falls as Daeef and cannot be quoted for reasoning. Hadith No. 3 أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدِانَ أنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ , نا الْحَسَنُ بْن عَلِيٍّ الْمَعْمَرِيُّ , نا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ , نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حِمْيَرٍ , نا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ , عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ , عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ , عَنْ عُبَادَةَ , أَنَّ مَحْمُودًا صَلَّى إِلَى جَانِبِهِ فَسَمِعَهُ يَقْرَأُ وَرَاءَ الْإِمَامِ , فَسَأَلَهُ حِينَ انْصَرَفَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ , فَقَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُول اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَّنَا يَوْمًا فَانْصَرَفَ إِلَيْنَا وَقَدْ غَلَطَ فِي بَعْضِ الْقُرْآنِ فَقَالَ: «هَلْ قَرَأَ مَعِي مِنْكُمْ أَحَد؟» قُلْنَا: نَعَمْ قَالَ: «قَدْ عَجِبْتُ مِنْ هَذَا الَّذِي يُنَازِعُنِي الْقُرْآنَ إِذَا قَرَأَ الْإِمَامُ فَلَا يَقْرَأْ مَعَهُ أَحَد مِنْكُمْ إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ» SANAD (Chain of Narrators) Imam Behaiqi Rh. »»► Abul Hasan Ali Ibn Ahmed bin Abdaan Rh. »»► Ahmed bin Ubaid As-saffaar Rh. »»► Hasan bin Ali Al Ma’amari Rh. »»► Amr bin Usmaan Rh. »»► Muhammed bin Himyar Rh. »»► Shoaib Ibn Abi Hamza Rh. »»► Abdullah Ibn Amr Ibn ul Haaris Rh. »»► Mehmood bin Rabii Rh. »»► Ubaada Rdh. »»► Rasoolullah S.A.W. (Kitaab ul Qirat Lil Behaiqi : Hadith no 116) In this chain of narrators, according to Makhool Rh. - the name mentioned is Abdullah Ibn Amr Ibn ul Haaris Rh. who is a Majhool (meaning unknown). Except Imam Ibn Hibban Rh. - no one has called him SIQAH. (trustworthy) Moreover the chain of narrators is not complete meaning its Munqate, because Shoaib Ibn Abi Hamza Rh. heard it from Abdullah bin Amr Ibn ul Haaris is not clear, has no evidence OR conclusively agreed. For these two reasons, this hadith also falls in the category of Daeef. Hadith No. 4 أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْحَافِظُ , وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ وَأَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ السُّلَمِيُّ قَالُوا: نا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْن يَعْقُوبَ نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ خَلِيٍّ الْحِمْصِيُّ , نا بِشْرُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ , عَنْ أَبِيهِ , عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي فَرْوَةَ , أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْد اللَّهِ بْن عَمْرو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ , عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ , عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ , أَنَّ مَحْمُودًا صَلَّى إِلَى جَنْبِهِ يَوْمًا فَسَمِعَهُ يَقْرَأُ وَرَاءَ الْإِمَامِ فَذَكَرَهُ بِمِثْلِهِ وَقَالَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” قَدْ عَجِبْتُ قُلْتُ: مِنْ هَذَا يُنَازِعُنِي الْقُرْآنَ؟ إِذَا قَرَأَ الْإِمَامُ فَلَا يَقْرَأَنَّ أَحَد مِنْكُمْ مَعَه إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ “ SANAD (Chain of Narrators) Imam Behaiqi Rh. »»► Imam Abu Abdullah Al Hafiz Rh. »»► Abul Abbas Muhammed bin Yaqub Rh. »»► Muhammed bin Khalid Al Hismi Rh. »»► Bishr bin Shoaib Rh. »»► his father [Shoaib Ibn Abi Hamza Rh.] »»► Ishaq bin Abdullah Ibn Abi Farwa Rh. »»► Abdullah bin Amr Ibn ul Haaris Rh. »»► Mehmood bin Rabii Rh. »»► Ubaada Rdh. »»► Rasoolullah S.A.W. (Kitaab ul Qirat Lil Behaiqi : Hadith No. 117) The chain of narration makes it fall under the category of Daeef. 1 – In this chain Abdullah bin Amr Ibn ul Haaris Rh. is mentoined, already mentioned above that he is a Majhool (meaning unknown). 2 – Another narrator in the chain is Ishaq bin Abdullah Rh. regarding him Imam Yahiya Rh. said that he is a Kazzab. In another place he mentioned that he does not know anything and he is not Siqah (Trustworthy) Imam Yahiya bin Maeen Rh., Imam Muhammed bin Abdullah bin Ammaar Rh. say that this narration is Daeef. Ibn ul Madeeni Rh. says that he is a Munkar ul Hadith. Imam Abu Haatim Rh., Imam Abu Zura’a Rh., Imam Nasaai Rh., Imam Amr bin Ali Rh. say that its Matrook ul Hadith. Imam Darqutni Rh., Imam Barqaani Rh. said that it is Matrook (obsolescent) Imam Saaji Rh. that it is a Daeef Hadith and there is nothing to it. Imam Uqaili Rh., Imam Dulaabi Rh., Imam Saaji Rh., Imam Ibn Jarood Rh., Imam Abu Arb Rh., Imam Ibn Shaheen Rh., Imam Ibn Hibban Rh. have all mentioned this narrator and hadith as Daeef. Imam Bazzaar Rh. also says that its Daeef. Imam Khaleeli Rh. said that its very Daeef. (Tehzeeb ut Tehzeeb : Volume 1 : Page 241-242) Hadith No. 5 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْحَافِظُ , أنا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْحَافِظُ , نا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ بِهَرَاةَ , وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ قَالَا: ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ , نا صَدَقَةُ وَهُوَ ابْنُ خَالِدٍ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ , عَنْ حَرَامِ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ , وَمَكْحُولٌ , عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ , وَفِي رِوَايَةِ الْحَافِظِ وَهُوَ ابْنُ الرَّبِيعِ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ , عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ وَكَانَ عَلَى إِيلِيَا فَأَبْطَأَ عُبَادَةُ عَنْ صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ , فَأَقَامَ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ الصَّلَاةَ وَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مِنْ أَذَّنَ بِبَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ , فَجِئْتُ مَعَ عُبَادَةَ حتَّى صَفَفْنَا مَعَ النَّاسِ وَأَبُو نُعَيْمٍ يَجْهَرُ بِالْقِرَاءَةِ , فَقَرَأَ عُبَادَةُ بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ حتَّى خَتَمَهَا , وَفِي رِوَايَةِ الْحَافِظُ حتَّى فَهِمْتُهَا مِنْهُ , فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قُلْتُ: سَمِعْتُكَ تَقْرَأُ بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ: نَعَمْ , صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُول اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْضَ الصَّلَاةِ الَّتِي كَانَ يَجْهَرُ فِيهَا بِالْقُرْآنِ فَقَالَ: «لَا يَقْرَأَنَّ أَحَد مِنْكُمْ إِذَا جَهَرْتُ بِالْقِرَاءَةِ إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ» SANAD (Chain of Narrators) Imam Behaiqi Rh. »»► Abu Abdullah Al Hafiz Rh. »»► Abu Ali Al Hafiz Rh. »»► Al Hussain Ibn Idrees Al Ansaari Rh. »»► Hishaam bin Ammaar Rh. »»► Sadaqa Ibn Khalid Ad-Dimishqi Rh. »»► Zaid bin Waaqid Rh. »»► Harraam Ibn Haakim Rh. Wa Makhool Rh. »»► Naafe bin Mehmood Rh.»»► Ubaada bin Saamit Rdh. »»► Rasoolullah S.A.W This hadith is also Daeef because in the chain of narrators you have the same person Naafe bin Mehmood Rh. who is Majhool (Unknown) as mentioned above. (Kitaab ul Qirat Lil Behaiqi : Hadith No. 120) This hadith is once again Daeef and cannot be quoted as a reference.
